Visit MNC Group, Press Council: Media Convergence Needed to Protect National Industries

JAKARTA, - Regulation in the media convergence era is really needed. This regulation is important to protect national interests.

This has been discussed by Chairman of the Press Council Muhammad Nuh and Member of Press Council with Chairman MNC Group Hary Tanoesoedibjo (HT) and MNC Media Editorial Leaders.

"The entry of this cyber is still relatively new, but it has an extraordinary impact. It is impossible for the Press Council to resolve it by themselves; that's the reason we invite all constituents, stakeholders to come together to face this new world," said M. Nuh during his visit to MNC Tower, Jakarta, Tuesday (3/12/2019).

Based on that, said Nuh, aspects of regulation, industrial protection, and education were considered necessary. Do not let, regulations are made but not according to real phenomena, one of which is convergence.

The former Minister of Communication and Information said that the rules must involve all sectors so that a thorough discussion was needed from either the industry players, the Press Council, the Parliament, and the relevant ministries.

"Everyone must cooperate because this is our future," he said.

Nuh gave an example of about two or three years ago; there were many issues about online taxis, where technology had arrived in Indonesia, but there were no related policies or regulations. The impact of this phenomenon, there is a gap between these two.

He said that the Press Council considered the rules must be in accordance with changes in technological progress.

"The Press Council is very grateful to be able to stay in touch with Mr. Hary Tanoe, a person who is not only knowledgeable but directly practices in the digital world," said Nuh.

MNC Group Chairman Hary Tanoesoedibjo said, in this era of convergence, one application can do everything. Content related to press, video, e-commerce, can be done in one super-apps application.

This needs to be watched out because, generally, the big digital players are foreign.

"It's not anti-foreign, no, I mean how the business works, the industry can develop well and still protect national players, local players," HT said.

He emphasizes national interests must be protected. "Because in Indonesia, there are still many of our people whose welfare has not yet been raised," he said.
